Department of Urban Sociology
The main goal of the Department of Urban Sociology is to train practical experts on urban issues. A practical expert is a person who can understand the dynamics of various social phenomena in urban societies and provide clear and detailed solutions to some problems in urban societies. To reach this objective, students take basic courses and then choose one of two tracks in either cultural industry or urban community. Basic courses provide the foundation for advanced levels of knowledge and practical applications of knowledge, focusing on enhancement of students' ability of research, presentation, and team work. Specifically, students learn to read foreign languages, write in a logical fashion, conduct some social research and make academic presentations using visual and auditory tools. Two tracks to become experts on cultural industry and urban community are closely related with the demands of urban sociology. These tracks focus on theoretical basis and research ability that will help students to apply his or her knowledge to real social phenomena systematically. In particular, we highlight the importance of the liveliness of the cultural industry and we guide students to be in touch with real cases by focusing on many practical methodologies which are vital in research and planning. In addition to the regular curriculum, we hold various events such as the 'Urban Film Festival,' 'Internet Social Survey Seminar,' international scholarship exchange programs, workshops on visual media and surveys and link them closely to our established curriculum.
